Pre-concert chats now offered at all OSO concerts this season.

Main Series Concerts

ORCHESTRAL SHOWPIECES

All performances are at 8:00 p.m. in Southam Hall at the National Arts Centre.

This season we shine the spotlight on the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra itself. It ‘solos’ in four Concertos for Orchestra and three substantial symphonies

I. October 5, 2009
Wagner
Prelude to Act III Lohengrin
Prelude & Liebstod
Wagner
Tristan und Isolde
Bruckner
Symphony No. 3
We begin in October with a very special rarity – Bruckner’s relatively youthful Third Symphony. Bruckner was so enamoured of Wagner’s music that he included quotations from Wagner’s operas in this glorious symphony. So, it is appropriate that we start the concert with the Wedding March from Act III of Lohengrin and the work that changed Western music for ever, the Prelude & Liebestod from Tristan und Isolde

Please join OSO Music Director and Conductor, David Currie, for Viennese-style desserts and coffee in the NAC Salon immediately after the concert sponsored by P.J. Doherty & Associates. Reception tickets are $30.00 and can be ordered from the OSO Ticket Manager at 613-231-2561 or at the NAC box office.

II. November 16,2009
Beethoven
Creatures of Prometheus
Kodály
Concerto for Orchestra
Berlioz
Harold in Italy
Rennie Regehr, viola soloist
In November we begin with the rarely heard Overture from Beethoven’s ballet, The Creatures of Prometheus. Then the Orchestra gets to shine in Kodály’s lively Concerto for Orchestra. Also, with Berlioz’s quasi-concerto for viola, Harold in Italy (based on Childe Harold by Lord Byron), we introduce you to our new Principal Viola (Rennie Regehr).

III. January 25, 2010
Pierre Chrétien
Tezeta
Shostakovich
Cello Concerto
Brian Yoon, cello soloist
Bartók
Concerto for Orchestra
In January it is fitting, for a concert celebrating OSO’s mentorship program of University of Ottawa students, that we showcase the talents of the cellist Brian Yoon, a student and a member of the OSO cello section, in Shostakovich’s haunting Cello Concerto No.1. The concert ends with Bartók’s magnificent and spectacular Concerto for Orchestra

IV. April 12, 2010
Koprowski
Elegia
Maria Knapik, Soprano
Lutoslawski
Concerto for Orchestra
Górecki
Symphony No. 3; Symphony of Sorrowful Songs
Maria Knapik, soprano
In April we make a musical visit to Poland. Our soloist is the well-known Ottawa soprano, Maria Knapik. She will sing the deeply moving Elegia written for her by the Canadian-Polish composer, Peter Paul Koprowski. She will also sing the very haunting soprano solo in Górecki’s Third Symphony (Symphony of Sorrowful Songs). The orchestra gets to shine, too, in Lutoslawski’s powerful Concerto for Orchestra.

V. May 17, 2010
Shchedrin
Naughty Limericks
Somers
Three Limericks
Mathew Larkin, Conductor, Michèle Bogdanowicz, mezzo-soprano and Ottawa Choral Society

Prokofiev
Alexander Nevsky
Michèle Bogdanowicz, mezzo-soprano and Ottawa Choral Society
Ottawa Choral Society Co-Production

Our final concert in May displays the last of our Concertos for Orchestra – this one by Shchedrin is really different! It’s called Naughty Limericks – which, of course, leads perfectly to a rendition of the very risqué Three Limericks by Canada’s own Harry Somers! We conclude our season with Prokofiev’s intensely moving cantata Alexander Nevsky, assisted by the Ottawa Choral Society.
