The 2011-2012 season of the Ottawa Symphony
Orchestra will be Maestro Currie’s 20th
anniversary as Music Director. To celebrate the
occasion, Maestro Currie has chosen a season
that reprises some of the great works the OSO
has performed in the last twenty years - along
with a brace of works new to the OSO repertoire.
In the line-up of magnificent works that will
fill Southam Hall with exciting full orchestral
sound are Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5,
Prokofiev’s Lieutenant Kijé Suite,
Stravinsky’s Petrushka Suite, Ravel’s
Daphnis & Chloé Suites 1 & 2,
Bartók’s Miraculous Mandarin Suite,
and Holst’s The Planets - which will
also be a wonderful excuse to celebrate the 30th
anniversary of the Ottawa Youth Orchestra
Academy which will join the OSO for this
concert.
The season is also an occasion to celebrate the
work of three well established Canadian
composers - John Estacio (Frenergy),
Steven Gellman (Jaya Overture) and Kelly
Marie Murphy (And so be changed to lightning
in the end).
We conclude with something really special -
Mahler’s last (incomplete) Symphony No. 10; a
passionate love letter to his wife Alma written
during his final months. This is definitely not
to be missed. So, please join us for this
special season of celebration which blends the
familiar with new vistas.
